Export Subtitles and Transcripts

Export timed subtitle files or a readable transcript from your current edit or the original recordings.

You need to transcribe the media first. See Transcribe Your Footage.

Export your transcript

  1. Choose File → Export → Subtitles / Transcript….
  2. Select the recordings to include. Only media with transcripts appears in the list.
  3. Choose Timeline edit or Full transcript.
  4. Choose at least one format and any options you need.
  5. Click Export….

Choose between the edit and the full recording

Timeline edit uses the transcribed words that remain in enabled timeline clips. Its timing follows the edited sequence, so choose it when the subtitles need to match your exported video.

Full transcript uses each recording's original timing. Timeline cuts and disabled clips do not affect it. This is useful for an archive or a transcript of everything recorded, but it may restore material you meant to leave out of the edit. Check the files before sharing them.

Choose formats and optional fields

You can export one or more formats at once:

  • SRT and VTT are timed subtitle files.
  • Plain text is a readable transcript without subtitle cues.
  • Premiere (JSON) is a transcript file Premiere Pro can attach to the original recording. See Hand the transcript to Premiere Pro. It is only available for Full transcript.

Timestamps adds a time such as [00:12:35] to each plain-text paragraph. It does not change SRT or VTT files. Speaker labels mark speaker changes in every format.

Apply module results to a full transcript

A Full transcript can apply results from tools you already ran:

  • Retakes keeps only the winning take from each retake group.
  • Umm removal leaves out words that Detect Umms marked for automatic removal.
  • Rough cut leaves out sentences that a Rough Cut would remove.

These filters do not appear for Timeline edit because the timeline already contains the edits you applied.

Choose combined or separate files

For Timeline edit, One combined file preserves the sequence order across recordings. One file per media separates each recording, but every file still uses timeline timing.

A Full transcript always creates separate files because each recording has its own clock.

Combined files use the project name. Separate files use the recording name without its original extension and go into the folder you choose. If you select several formats, each gets its own extension, such as .srt, .vtt, or .txt.

Hand the transcript to Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro stores a transcript on the source recording, not on the edited sequence. That is why the Premiere (JSON) format only works with Full transcript, and why the box only appears once you pick Full transcript. Once imported, every piece of that recording you cut into a Premiere sequence carries the transcript, so text-based editing and captions keep working after you change the edit.

Each recording gets its own file, named after the recording plus .json, for example interview.mp4.json. Premiere has no bulk import, so you import one file per recording:

  1. In Premiere Pro, double-click the recording in the Project panel so it opens in the Source Monitor.
  2. Open the Text panel (Window → Text) and pick the Transcript tab.
  3. Click the … menu at the top right of the panel, then Import → Import transcript… (older versions call it Import Static Transcript).
  4. Choose the matching .json file.

The transcript appears with the words, timecodes and speaker names from Solar Sailer. Timecodes include the recording's own start timecode, so a word at 5 seconds shows as 5 seconds after the clip's first frame. Premiere extends each paragraph to the start of the next one and marks the pause with […].

Speaker labels controls the speaker names in the file. With it off, Premiere shows a single speaker named "Speaker 1". Words that are only punctuation are left out, because Premiere needs a timed word for every entry. Tested with Premiere Pro 2026 (version 26.5).

Subtitle exports overwrite existing target files without asking. This includes every selected format in a combined export and every generated recording name in a separate-file export. Choose an empty folder or move any files you need to keep before exporting.

In Timeline edit, selected media contributes nothing if none of it remains on the timeline. If the whole export is empty, select media that still appears in the edit or switch to Full transcript. For a full transcript emptied by module filters, turn off the filters you do not want.
