Export to Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro XML moves your rough cut into Premiere without rendering it. It carries timeline instructions and file paths, not the media itself or a finished video.

To create a finished MP4, MP3, or WAV directly from Solar Sailer, see Export a Video or Audio File.

Export from Solar Sailer

  1. Choose File > Export > Premiere Pro XML….
  2. Save the .xml file.

The filename starts with your Solar Sailer project name. If you're sending several cuts, add a version or date so the recipient knows which one to import. The XML can live beside the Premiere project or in a handoff folder. Its location does not change where Premiere looks for the media.

Import into Premiere

Open the Premiere project where you want the rough cut, then choose File > Import and open the XML. Premiere creates a sequence with the Solar Sailer project's name, frame rate, resolution, video tracks, and audio tracks.

Keep the media linked

The XML points to each original media file at its current location. It does not copy those files. If Premiere can reach the same paths, the sequence should open with its media online.

If files have moved or the XML is opened on another computer, use Premiere's Link Media command and point it to the originals. Keep Relink others automatically selected when the files still share the same folder structure. For a handoff, send the source media separately from the XML.

info

Your project's .sailer file only opens in Solar Sailer. To hand off subtitles or a transcript, see Export Subtitles and Transcripts.

What carries over

  • Video and audio tracks keep their order. Clips keep their timeline positions and source in and out points.
  • Position, scale, and rotation become Premiere's Basic Motion settings. Opacity and crop become Premiere's Opacity and Crop effects.
  • Clip volume and audio fades become Premiere's Audio Levels.
  • Disabled clips stay disabled and use the Lavender label in Premiere.

Check warnings and known limits

XML is an exchange format, not a copy of the whole Solar Sailer project. Markers, clip-link relationships, track names, track controls, and subtitles do not export. Linked video and audio can arrive in sync, but Premiere does not receive the link between them.

Some framing cannot match exactly because Premiere's Basic Motion uses one scale value. Solar Sailer exports the horizontal value from a non-uniform scale. A rotated clip with an uneven crop can also pivot differently in Premiere. If Solar Sailer reports an export warning, check the named clip in Premiere before you continue finishing.

If the export fails, do not use the XML at that destination. Choose a writable local folder and export again. A read-only folder, disconnected drive, or locked file can prevent the export.

Bring a Premiere sequence back

  1. In Premiere, choose File > Export > Final Cut Pro XML for the sequence you want to return.
  2. In Solar Sailer, choose File > Import > Premiere Pro XML… and open the .xml file.

Use standard .xml, not Final Cut Pro's newer .fcpxml format. Solar Sailer adds the imported tracks and clips to the current project, so an empty project is the cleanest place for a round trip.

Solar Sailer can bring back cuts, static Motion, Opacity and Crop settings, time-aligned audio and video links, disabled clips, clip volume, plain audio fades, and sequence or clip markers. It cannot reproduce transitions, nested sequences, speed changes, or animated effect keyframes. It skips media that no longer exists at the path stored in the XML. Read any import warning before editing further because it names what Solar Sailer skipped or simplified.
