Face Tracking
Face Tracking records when people are on screen and looking at the camera. It creates data for Camera Selection and Delete Non-looking, but it does not draw boxes or other markers on the preview.
Run Face Tracking
- Open the Process menu and click Face Tracking…. You can also right-click files in the media bin.
- Check the video files you want to analyze. Face-camera files appear first and start checked. Files covered by an earlier run start unchecked and show Already tracked. Check one if you want to run it again.
- Click Run Face Tracking.
Face Tracking needs video, but no other AI tool needs to run first. It runs on your computer and does not require an API key or send footage to an AI provider.
To cancel a run or deal with a failure, see Run an AI Tool.
Choose what to analyze
Sample interval controls how often Face Tracking checks a frame. It runs from 50 to 250 milliseconds and starts at 100. A lower interval checks more frames and takes longer.
Turn on Only analyze timeline content to skip parts of the source files that the timeline does not use. Choosing On Timeline in the dialog turns this option on automatically.
Turn on Only analyze transcribed speech to analyze speech instead of the full file. This includes speech transcribed on a separate audio file when it is synced to the camera. Files without transcript coverage are skipped, not analyzed in full.
This option needs existing Transcribe and Sync results. Selecting those tools in the same first-time Batch Process run will not unlock it because you choose the Face Tracking settings before those results exist.
With both options on, Face Tracking analyzes only transcribed speech within the footage used on the timeline.
Check and correct the results
A file with Face Tracking results shows an eye icon on its media-bin card. Click the card's details row to see how many identities Face Tracking found, how often someone was on screen, and how often someone looked at the camera.
If Face Tracking finds few or no faces, the app warns you. The warning does not mean the run failed, and it is normal for screen recordings and other footage without people. If it happens on a face camera, check that you selected the right file. You can also rerun the file with a lower Sample interval to sample more frames.
Face Tracking separates faces but does not name people. Run Find Characters before or after Face Tracking, and Solar Sailer links the results.
Use the results
Camera Selection uses Face Tracking to judge who is present, speaking, or looking at the camera. Delete Non-looking uses it to preview and remove sections where the people you choose are not looking.
Missing Face Tracking coverage is not treated as proof that nobody is there. Camera Selection can fall back to other evidence, and Delete Non-looking leaves uncovered footage unchanged. If either tool reports missing coverage, use Process Missing, wait for Face Tracking to finish, then open the tool again.
