The Transcript on the Timeline

The transcript row lines up spoken words with the audio clips they came from. Use it to find dialogue, choose exact words, or trim a clip at a spoken boundary.

Show or hide the transcript row

  1. Right-click the header of an audio track.
  2. Click Show Transcript Track.

Only audio tracks can show transcripts. To hide the row, right-click the audio track header or its transcript header and click Hide Transcript Track. Solar Sailer saves this choice with the project.

When you add, paste, or move an already-transcribed clip onto an audio track, Solar Sailer opens that track's transcript row. If you hide the row yourself, it stays hidden when more clips arrive.

Follow the transcript through an edit

Each sentence sits over the part of the clip that contains it. Moving a clip moves its transcript with it. Trimming or slipping a clip changes which part of the source transcript appears.

If you use the same source file in several places, each clip shows the words inside its own source range. Correcting the transcript updates the text everywhere that source file appears. Timeline edits do not rewrite the source transcript.

Select words

  1. Click a sentence to open its individual words.
  2. Click a word to select it.
  3. Hold Shift or Ctrl while clicking to add or remove words.

To select a run of words, start a selection box in empty space inside the row and drag across the words. A selection box can select words only from the sentence you opened.

Selecting transcript text does not move the playhead. Use the timeline ruler when you want to navigate or start playback from a different time.

Trim at a spoken boundary

Drag the left or right edge of a sentence or word. The clip below trims to that boundary. Snapping applies, and Ctrl+Z undoes the trim. A locked track blocks the edit. With Linked Selection on, a locked linked partner can block it too. See Moving and Trimming.

Use transcript annotations

A ! means that the sentence contains a word waiting for review. Open the Review tab to check it. See Fix Transcript Mistakes.

If Detect Retakes grouped a sentence, right-click it to choose the best take, mark the group Not a retake, remove that take from the group, or open it in Retake review. See Detect Retakes.

Correct the text

You cannot retype words on the timeline. Use the Review tab instead. It can correct only words and phrases that were flagged for review, so an unflagged mistake cannot be changed in the app yet. See Fix Transcript Mistakes.
