Navigate and Zoom the Timeline
Move the playhead, change the timeline scale, and reach tracks or moments that are out of view.
Move the playhead
Click or drag along the time scale at the top of the main timeline. If you do this during playback, playback stops.
Press Left or Right to move one frame. Press Home or End to jump to the start or end. See Playback Controls for the rest of the playback keys.
You can also click the timecode or frame count to type a destination. See Jump to an exact time.
Zoom the timeline
Press - to zoom out or = to zoom in. + also zooms in. You can use the zoom buttons or slider at the right end of the status bar instead.
These controls keep a visible playhead in place. If the playhead is offscreen, they zoom around the middle of the view. For a specific cut, point to it and hold Alt while rolling the mouse wheel.
Press Shift+Z, or click the fit control beside the zoom buttons, to fit the whole sequence in the window. This also returns the view to the start.
Pan left and right
Hold Ctrl or Shift and roll the mouse wheel anywhere over the timeline. A plain wheel also pans sideways when the pointer is over the divider between the video and audio sections.
Scroll video and audio tracks separately
Roll the plain mouse wheel over the video or audio tracks to scroll that section. Each section keeps its own position. If the wheel pans sideways instead, release Ctrl or Shift and move the pointer into the section you want to scroll.
Drag the divider between the sections to give one of them more room. Press Escape during the drag to cancel.
Get around with the mini-timeline
The mini-timeline above the tracks gives you a quick way to cross a long project.
- Click a point to center the main timeline there.
- Drag the view box to pan.
- Drag either edge of the view box to zoom.
The mini-timeline moves your view, not the playhead. To move the playhead, click or drag along the time scale in the main timeline.
To pin down moments you want to come back to, add Markers.
