Classify Your Footage
Classify labels video and audio so Solar Sailer can make better choices later. You can run the AI on import, rerun it when a label looks wrong, or set the label yourself.
What Classify decides
For video, Classify chooses a shot type, framing, subject count, and representative thumbnail frame. The shot types are FAC Face, SCN Scene, WRK Work, SBJ Subject, HND Hands, SCR Screen, BRD Board, POV POV, MIX Mixed, GFX Graphics, ANI Animation, and FLM Film.
For audio, it chooses SPEECH, MUSIC, or SFX. It can also record loudness and the number of voices.
These labels aren't cosmetic. Sync can use video labels to decide the vertical order of new tracks. FAC files start checked in Face Tracking and Find Characters. Camera Selection shows the dominant label for each camera lane.
Before you classify
AI classification needs a saved project, an online source file, and either a Google Gemini or Anthropic API key under Edit > Preferences… > API Keys. Images can't be classified.
With the default model settings, Solar Sailer sends sample frames or short audio excerpts to Google Gemini and may fall back to Anthropic. The original media file stays on your drive. Your provider bills the usage, which is roughly $0.001 per clip. See the privacy policy for the data each AI feature sends.
Setting a label yourself doesn't contact an AI provider or add a usage charge.
Classify new imports automatically
Auto-classify imported media is on by default under Edit > Preferences… > Import. Turn it off before importing footage when you don't want samples sent to an AI provider.
If neither supported API key is available, Solar Sailer skips classification for that import and directs you to API Keys. The files still import.
Run Classify yourself
- Save the project.
- Select the video or audio files in the media bin.
- Right-click the selection and choose Classify > Auto-Classify.
Check the classification badge in the media bin when the run finishes. Video thumbnails also update to match the new label.
If every selected file already has a label, choose Edit Classification > Rerun Auto-Classify instead. A rerun replaces a label you set yourself. In a mixed selection, offline files are skipped and the rest still run.
Correct a wrong label yourself
- Save the project.
- Select the files you want to relabel.
- Right-click the selection and open Classify or Edit Classification.
- Choose the correct code.
The code applies to every selected file of the same kind as the file you right-clicked. For example, choosing a video code leaves selected audio files alone. A label you set yourself stays in place unless you choose Rerun Auto-Classify or replace it with another code.
